Track your Click-to-WhatsApp ads

A Click-to-WhatsApp ad is a Facebook or Instagram ad whose button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business. When a customer taps the ad and sends their first message, Meta attaches the ad’s details to that message. tkana saves those details with the conversation, so you can see which ad each customer came from, how many conversations each ad brought in, and what happened next.

There is nothing to set up in tkana. The WhatsApp number your ad points to just needs to be connected to your account.

You create, run, and pay for the ad in Meta Ads Manager, not in tkana. tkana does not create or run ads.

  1. Make sure your WhatsApp Business number is connected to tkana. See Connect your WhatsApp Business number.
  2. In Meta Ads Manager, create an ad that sends people to WhatsApp, and pick the same number that is connected to tkana.
  3. Publish the ad. As soon as the first customer starts a conversation from it, the ad appears in the Click to WhatsApp Ads tab.

For Meta’s own steps, see Ads that click to WhatsApp on WhatsApp Business.

Your AI agent answers conversations that start from an ad just like any other conversation. If you install the Lead Qualification skill, it asks every customer who came from the ad your qualification questions and alerts your sales team to the hot ones.

Open Marketing in the sidebar and choose the Click to WhatsApp Ads tab. It sits between Campaigns and Gallery, and the number next to its name is how many ads have started conversations with your business.

Use the Date range menu at the top of the tab: Last 7 days, Last 30 days (the default), Last 90 days, or All time. Every number in the tab follows the range you pick.

The top row adds up all your ads in the selected range:

Card What it means
Conversations from ads How many conversations customers started from any ad.
New customers Customers whose first contact with your business was the ad.
Replied after the first message The share of conversations where the customer sent at least a second message, with the count underneath.
Went quiet The share of conversations that closed with no reply from the customer.
Tickets / bookings Tickets and bookings that came out of ad conversations. Shown according to your permissions.
Came back later Customers who started another conversation after the ad conversation.

Below the totals there is one card per ad, most recently active first. Each card shows:

  • The ad’s picture. If there is none, the card shows the ad type instead, such as Image · Instagram post or Video · Facebook post.
  • Meta ad followed by the last digits of the ad ID, and when the ad was Last seen.
  • The ad’s headline and text as Meta sent them. An ad with no headline reads Ad without a headline.
  • The ad’s numbers in the range: Conversations, New, Replied, and Tickets, with a small chart of conversations per day.
  • The dates of the first and last conversation from the ad, and a View conversations link that opens this ad’s conversations in Conversations as a table.

If you have more than 100 ads, use Newer ads and Older ads at the bottom of the tab to move between them.

Click any ad card to open its page. The breadcrumb at the top shows where you are: Marketing, then Click to WhatsApp Ads, then the ad’s short ID.

In the page header:

  • Meta ad and the full ad ID, with a Copy button.
  • The ad’s headline, the dates it was seen (Seen … to …), and how many days have passed with no new conversations, if any.
  • The Date range menu, starting from the range you picked in the tab.
  • Open ad post, which opens the ad’s Facebook or Instagram post in a new tab.
  • A View conversations button with the count, which opens all of this ad’s conversations in the conversations table.

The page then shows these sections:

Section What it shows
What the customer saw A preview of the ad as the customer saw it: picture, headline, text, and the WhatsApp button. Below it, Then in WhatsApp: the ad’s greeting and the most common first message.
Conversations, New customers, Tickets, Bookings, Came back later This ad’s numbers in the selected range.
What happened next How many customers Started a conversation, then Replied after the first message, Went quiet, Opened a ticket, Made a booking, or were Handed to a person.
Conversations per day A chart of conversations on each day of the range. Long ranges group a few days into each bar.
Why they wrote AI contact reasons. They appear after a conversation closes.
First message customers sent Messages that two or more customers sent first. They show which prefilled message in your ad people tap.

tkana shows only what Meta attaches to the customer’s first WhatsApp message from the ad. It needs no access to your Meta ad account.

You see in tkana You don’t see in tkana
The ad ID Campaign and ad set names
The ad’s headline and text Ad cost and spend
The picture or video Results counted by Ads Manager
The link to the ad post Return on ad spend (ROAS)
The click ID and when the conversation started The ad’s status (active or paused)

For spend and results, use Meta Ads Manager. You can match its numbers to tkana’s using the ad ID.

  • Older conversations have no ad data. Conversations that started before tkana began saving ad details carry no ad data, even if they came from an ad.
  • “No ad attribution” doesn’t mean the customer found you on their own. A conversation without ad data reads No ad attribution. The customer may have seen your ad and then messaged you directly, in which case Meta sends nothing.
  • Ad pictures. Meta’s picture links expire after a few days, so tkana keeps a copy of each ad’s picture on its first conversation. If the link expired before that, the ad’s page tells you the picture is not available. Open the ad post to see it.
  • Tell your ads apart. If several ads share a headline, use the last digits of the ad ID shown on each card. Better still, give each ad its own headline.
  • One prefilled message per ad. Give each ad a different prefilled first message, then check First message customers sent to see what people tap.
